FOX JAFFNA by Fox Resorts

FOX JAFFNA by Fox Resorts is basking in its new found glory as a chic boutique hotel in Jaffna. Once the family home of a leading family in Jaffna, the house has a colourful history. During the country’s civil war this palatial home was acquired by insurgents who added underground bunkers to it and made it their Treasury. When Jaffna was liberated by the armed forces, they acquired the property and used it as an office. After the cessation of the war, the rightful owners reclaimed their ancestral home and embarked on an arduous mission to turn this home in to a boutique hotel replete with a profusion of art by some of Sri Lanka’s eminent artists.

A stone’s throw from the Jaffna town, FOX JAFFNA by Fox Resorts is situated in a village called Kokovil. Having shed its battle scars this property is one of the finest in the peninsular. The only memory of its connection to its tumultuous past are two underground bunkers which have been turned into an art gallery and a museum. The gallery contains copies of original paintings of Sri Lankan ‘masters’ such as George Keyt, Ivan Peiris and George Bevan to name a few. The owner of the property is a discerning art collector and it is his intention to share the beauty of these works of art with travellers to FOX JAFFNA by Fox Resorts.

The old bungalow named after George Keyt has four well appointed suites while the new wing comprising of six blocks named after Richard Gabriel, Donald Fernando and George Classen, Justin Deraniyagala and Tudor Rajapakse, Ivan Peiris, David Paynter and George Bevan have 4 rooms each.

The rooms are beautifully decorated in keeping with the colours and landscape of the peninsular. All the rooms are spacious and minimal in design with paintings occupying pride of place. The rooms are well appointed and complemented with comfortable beds. The property is spread over three acres and in addition to the four suites and 24 rooms boasts a swimming pool and restaurant while plans are afoot to open a spa, a perfect addition to luxuriate oneself in after a busy day of sightseeing.

The restaurant serves a variety of dishes which includes western cuisine. However their specialty is in creating Jaffna cuisine. Their signature dishes are the Kool soup, an authentic seafood preparation, the Jaffna crab curry, garlic prawn curry and the mutton pooriyal. Guests are encouraged to indulge in the traditional Jaffna rice and curry which is cooked to a traditional recipe and is second to none.

Jaffna is packed to the brim with sights and experiences that are unique to the region. At an additional cost the hotel offers guided tours with English and Tamil speaking guides. A city tour of Jaffna, excursions to Casurina beach, Delft Island, Nagadeepa temple, Dambakola Patuna, Kandarodai and Keerimalai are highly recommended. The hotel also hosts a weekly cultural night with exotic and colourful dances that embody the vibrant spirit of Jaffna.

Immersed in history, FOX JAFFNA by Fox Resorts relates a tale of a home that has endured turbulent times and morphed in to a luxury boutique hotel offering a serendipitous sanctuary to visitors keen to explore the undiscovered beauty of Jaffna.
